You can substitute one of the following work projects for each of the writing assignments in this course!

Important: Print out this Work Report and take it with you!

1: Substitutes for First Writing Assignment (prior to First Mid-term):

  • Sunday April 13, 2008, 9am - noon: Second Sundays at Upper Newport Bay, sponsored by Orange County Parks. Help with habitat improvement on the bluffs overlooking Upper Newport Bay. Depending on immediate needs, work includes planting and watering native plants, removing non-native plants, removing trash, and maintaining trails. Tools will be provided but volunteers are welcome to bring their own labeled tools. Location: Meet at Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center, 2301 University Drive, Newport Beach, CA 92660. Please contact Jennifer Naegele at Jennifer.Naegele@rdmd.ocgov.com, 949-923-2297 to confirm that spaces are available.

2: Substitutes for Second Writing Assignment (prior to Second Mid-term):

  • Every Wednesday, 9am-11am: Steward Days at Upper Newport Bay, sponsored by the California Coastal Commission. Encourage the Bay’s unique genetics to move in to our restoration sites by collecting seeds, propagating plants, and helping with nursery operations. We may also work at restoration sites around the Bay removing invasive plants or planting natives. We meet at different sites around the Bay. Please contact Matt Yurko at myurko@coastal.ca.gov or (949) 640-0286 for site location and directions, and to confirm that spaces are available.
  • Thursday May 8, 9am-noon: Marine Life Inventory in Upper Newport Bay. This activity is being offered specifically for this class, and it uses several staff as well as volunteers who help with skippering the boats, organizing the sampling and identifying the catch. This involves a lot of work for the staff and volunteers, so we CANNOT have any no-shows. If you sign up for this but don't show up, you will lose the possibility of any credit for this assignment. The program takes place at the Marine Studies Center on Shellmaker Island, 600 Shellmaker, Newport Beach (a short bike ride down Back Bay Drive from campus!). You will be assigned to each of the following in rotation: beach seine, bottom trawl, water quality work/plankton tow or fishmeasuring station. It involves physical work! Please contact Jozsef Pentek to confirm that spaces are available
