At the medium bud stage, the regeneration blastema grows in size to become a cone of tissue. At the stage, the blastema is similar in appearance to a developing limb bud. Many experiments have demonstrated that the processes controlling growth and pattern formation at this point in regeneration are similar to those occuring during limb development.
