The wound healing stage is the first stage that an amputation
goes through after amputation. It is characterized by the migration of
the epidermis of the stump skin to cover the amputation plane. This epithelial
cover, referred to as the "wound epidermis" is required for regeneration
to be iniated. Limbs that heal with a flap of mature (instead of wound
epithelium) skin over them, will not regenerate.
