Critter o' the Month

PHYLUM: Mollusca
CLASS: Gastropoda
SPECIES: Cancellaria cooperi
COMMON NAME: Cooper's Nutmeg

Not much is known about C .cooperi. What little I've found published about it is obviously from people who are working only from dead shells. The color of the shell is usually described as tan, with dark brown stripes. When alive, however, there are also bands of blue-grey, and areas where the brown is almost red. The animal itself is very pale with brown flecks.

Cancellaria cooperi can be found at depths below 60ft. (18m), on sandy substrata. It does not appear to burrow, and instead crawls along on top of the sand. It can reach lengths of about 18cm, with the majority I've seen being about half that.

C. cooperi has been collected in the past primarily by dredging over soft sea bottoms, and has been found from San Francisco Bay to Southern California.
