Other Course Requirements

Field Gear: This is a field oriented, experiential course which will require wearing clothes suitable for weekly field trips. Old jeans, tennis shoes, drinking water, and gloves should be brought to each class. Carpooling is essential to reduce the number of vehicles we use traveling to our field sites.

Examinations: There will be a midterm examination on November 10 beginning at Noon and a final examination on Monday, December 8 beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Social Science Lecture Hall 100. Scantrons will be provided; don't bother to bring backpacks, etc. You will need your student photo identification card (registration ID card).

Plant Identification: We will be planting over a dozen plant species during the course, and I will expect you to be able to identify them by scientific and common names. I will provide live plant material for you in each class and I will identify these species in the field each week. In addition to the species you actually will be planting, there are a few of the most characteristic plants from the local coastal sage scrub and wetland communities I'll expect you to learn - and I will identify them many times in the field as well as provide you with material to study in class. You will be expected to be able to identify approximately 24 plant species by the end of the quarter. These will include species from the coastal sage scrub, southern oak woodland, freshwater marsh, salt marsh, and native grassland communities.

Term Paper: A paper of at least five (narrative) pages in length is required for this course. The paper must have at least ten references. No more than two of the references may be newspapers or "soft" publications. The first page of every reference must be xeroxed and attached to the paper at the end. All references must be correctly listed on a "Literature Cited" page, and every reference must be cited (referred to) in the body (narrative) of the paper. A list of potential topics will be handed out in class, and all topics must be approved by Dr. Bowler. The first page of all references cited must be attached to the paper. The paper will be due in class on November 24, which is two weeks before the Final.
