FEBRUARY 1998: PERU: IMPACT

Piura, northern Peru: Fourteen have died in all of Piura, 1,800 houses have been destroyed and 3,550 damaged. While agriculture has been almost abandoned, trees are growing rapidly, restoring forests. Food such as rice, sugar and oil are in short supply as is kerosene for cooking.
