3 OCTOBER 1997. PERU: CLIMATE, FISH

Sea temperatures off the Department of Arequipa, southern Peru, dropped 4 degrees C. Heavy rains in city of Arequipa and coastal town of Ilo, some landslides on coastal highway between Ilo and Tacna. Arequipa city daily air temperatures fluctuating between 8.5 and 24 degrees C, much wider than usual. Between Chincha and Lurin, south of Lima, unusual concentrations of shrimp found by fishermen; big sea turtles of unknown species have also been caught; red tide reported (colors vary between red and yellow). Northern Peru, Piura, unusually rough surf closing ports and wharfs.
