Proposal
to list 12 penguin species as threatened or endangered
under the Endangered Species Act of 1973
by Peter Bryant
In November, 2006, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service received a petition from the Center for Biological Diversity to list 12 penguin species as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. The Service found that the listing of ten of the species may be warranted; but that the information available did not justify listing two of the species (snares crested penguin and royal penguin). The Service therefore initiated a status review of the other ten species of penguins to determine whether they should be listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. The Center for Biological Diversity is suing the administration over its failure to act on this issue
