Part I: The
crisis in the world's oceans and coastal zones is from pollution, overfishing,
and habitat destruction. This assignment asks you to choose each of these
processes, and to describe the following for each:
1. Aquatic pollution Define aquatic pollution. Describe three different types of aquatic pollution. Give an example of each of these types of aquatic pollution. Describe the ecosystem service(s) that contribute to the amelioration of these types of aquatic pollution. Describe the technological fixes that attempt to deal with these three types of pollution.
2. Overfishing Define overfishing. Describe three different types of overfishing. Give an example of each of these types of overfishing in some special habitat/country where the practice is rampant. Describe the social ecological context that have led to these types of overfishing. Describe a social or technological fix that is currently being used attempt to deal with these three types of overfishing.
3. Habitat destruction Define habitat destruction of marine ecosystems. Describe three examples of habitat destruction in some special habitat/country where the practice is rampant. Describe the social ecological context that have led to these three examples. Describe a social or technological fix that is currently being used attempt to deal with these three types of habitat destruction.
Part II: Marine
conservation can be enhanced by improved water quality in the coastal zone.
Southern California's is being impacted by non-point pollution and point
source pollution. Use the WWW and other sources to investigate these two
sources of pollution in a county of your choice in southern California.
Specifically, what are the magnitudes and the extent of the problem; what
are the main sources of pollution; and what is being done at a local or
national level to stop this pollution?
