CHAPTER NINE

Sustainable & Integrated Coastal Zone Management

Exclusive Tenure

On Feb. 3, 1998, the ME Legislature's Marine Resources Committee voted 9-4 to support a measure that would
give Monhegan Island residents legal control of and exclusive access to lobstering grounds adjacent to their island.  Another provision in the measure provides for a one-year study by a 13-member task force to guide future decisions about local management along the ME coast.  On Feb. 25, 1998, the ME Senate voted 31-3 to approve the measure giving Monhegan Island residents legal control of and exclusive access to lobstering grounds adjacent to their island. In return, Monhegan Island residents relinquish most of their rights to fish outside their island's exclusive access zone. On Feb. 26, 1998, the ME House voted 132-14 to approve the measure, and on Feb. 27, 1998, Governor Angus King signed the bill into law.
